HISTORY
Batavia is the name given by the Dutch in the
colony trade now grown to become Jakarta, capital of Indonesia. Batavia was
established at the port named Jayakarta captured from the Sultanate of Banten.
Before controlled Banten, the city is known as the Sunda Kalapa, and was one
point trading Kingdom of Sunda. From this port city VOC controls trade and
military and political power in the archipelago.
Batavia name used since about 1621 to 1942, when the Dutch East Indies fell to the Japanese. As part of the de-Nederlandisasi, the city's name was changed to Jakarta. Malay-language forms, namely "Betawi", still in use today.
